Job Summary:

The artWorks and Retail Supervior is responsible for providing a person-centered and safe environment for the artWorks team by providing leadership development, training, information and assistance to staff and volunteers so they can work effectively with the artists. Leads the culture, client engagement, productivity, budget, and program ensuring employee and community engagement is promoted in both retail storefront and studio environment. They also help assist with merchandising, customer service and team staffing in the retail space.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recommend new services and modify existing services to meet participant needs. Implement activities that promote community inclusion and participation, and independence in the most natural setting possible.
  • Lead and manage budget and resources and implement strategies to achieve program goals and objectives that ensure that costs are controlled while generating enough revenue to meet objectives
  • Assist the ArtWorks and Retail Manager with long-range planning and goal setting for the organization, working toward the achievement of overall agency goals.
  • Assist with providing implementation for overall agency activities and special projects.
  • Leads compliance of training, compliance, and policy sign offs and is accountable to completion of meeting deadlines.
  • Provide direction to assigned artWorks staff and the studio and retail team.
  • Oversee resources and strategies to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Make recommendations for hire. Orient, train and develop staff and volunteer positions under supervision.
  • Make recommendations for MRC policies or procedures for assigned areas.
  • Inform the ArtWorks and Retail Manager of staff concerns, problems, issues, and corrective action with Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Measure results by determining performance indicators, determining critical data, and collecting data on a predetermined basis.
  • Possess knowledge of current trends in art in the community.
  • Work with customers in the store front, greeting customers, making sales, and being responsible for monies collected as backup for retail staff.
  • Develop and lead art shows and events to promote the artists' work.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols.
  • Ensure that recipient rights and confidentiality are protected in accordance with agency policy and the Michigan Mental Health Code.
  • Actively support and be knowledgeable about 1) culturally competent, recovery-based practices, 2) person-centered planning as a shared decision-making process with the individual who defines his or her own life goals and is assisted in developing a unique path toward those goals and 3) a trauma informed culture to aid clients in their recovery process.
  • Provide information and assistance to staff and volunteers so they can work effectively with the clients.
  • Ensure smooth operation of activities and communicate pertinent information and changes to ArtWorks and Retail Manager
  • Work with leadership and marketing staff to promote artWorks to family members/guardians, staff, clients, and the larger community as an opportunity that strengthens artistic skills and employment skills and provides a venue to develop a vocation and earn an income.
  • Complete incident reports as needed.
  • Conduct employee orientation, training, and development.
  • Ensure client attendance and progress notes are in compliance with Medicaid, CARF, and QMR standards.
  • Assist in problem solving when space and tenant issues arise, incidents occur, and clinical discussion and strategies need to be implemented.
  • Supervise, make recommendations for hire, train, and develop staff retail supervisor. Perform regular staff evaluations and recommend updates to job descriptions.
  • Develops and builds store displays. Manages all merchandising within each venue to present product in a clean and engaging manner at all times
  • Create and manage a team-based environment with staff and continually evolve developing a positive atmosphere within the department
  • Recommend marketing ideas in partnership with Manager to Director of Marketing and Fund Development to promote products and services offered by the company.
  • Measuring performance against predetermined goals and objectives to ensure that all objectives are met
  • Work with Manager to create a comprehensive pricing strategy
  • Developing strategies and plans to increase store traffic and sales
  • Identifying opportunities to improve operations by studying industry trends and customer preferences.
  • Create a company culture that promotes customer service and satisfaction in all aspects of the business.
  • Serve as a backup instructor or in Retail space as needed to meet ratio goals.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required for artHops, community events, and retail store coverage.

  • Must be effective in providing motivation and innovation when working with the artists.
  • Criminal records, driving and recipient rights screening required.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license, good driving record and the availability of licensed, insured vehicle for use on the job required.


Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a business or human services related field and/or 5 years combined experience providing services to individuals with disabilities or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a leadership position required. Three years preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to squat, reach, lift, carry 35 pounds, and tolerate prolonged standing.
  • Ability to meet intervention certification requirements.
  • Must have visual discrimination to differentiate between colors.
